In the meantime, here are some useful tips for keeping your workplace safe for all who work in it and visit it.
Most businesses must have a ‘responsible person’ whose specific role it is to take on the mantle of fire safety, however, here are some points that all staff should be aware of:
- 1. All staff must be alert to fire safety dangers – ensuring that any potential risks are highlighted immediately to the responsible person or fire service. Identification and training of designated members of staff are essential, and may even mean that their expertise stops a fire from spreading. - 2. Practice good housekeeping in the workplace – for example, clutter such as paper, can fuel a fire, as well as preventing access to exits and emergency equipment. Bins and recycling areas should be designated and cleared regularly.
- 3. Ensure that electrical appliances are tested regularly. Fires started by faulty electrical appliances are costly and easily avoidable.
- 4. Make sure that electrical control panels aren’t blocked in order that fire fighters are able to shut down power in an emergency.
- 5. Never block sprinklers, firefighting equipment or emergency exits. This will allow the fire service to get to equipment and exits more quickly, and consequently, will reduce the potential damage to both property and persons.
- 6. Be sure to have your specific fire strategy plans posted prominently around your building, in order that personnel and public can familiarise themselves with them. Fire in the workplace is not only a frightening and unpleasant experience for everyone involved, it also costs companies time and money. Rebuilding a workplace after a fire can be very expensive and time-consuming, and not every business manages to do it.
Fire safety in the home
As currently serving or retired fire fighters, Adena Fire consultants and engineers have seen the damage and suffering caused by fires in the home. We would like to give you some tips on fire safety in your home, suggested by the Fire and Rescue Service:
Make sure you have alarms on every level of your home regularly check that they are working, and replace batteries when necessary.
Always remember to put candles out.
Close inside doors at night (particularly to your kitchen) to stop a fire from spreading.
Make sure everyone knows their escape routes in the event of a fire. Ensure exits are left clear from clutter. Keep door and window keys where they can be found quickly.
Check that your cooker is turned off after use and before you go to bed.
Stub cigarettes out properly and dispose of them carefully. Keep lighters and matches out of reach of children.
Turn heaters off and ensure fireguards are put up, before you go out or go to bed.
